Where and When?
Musselcrackers are primarily found along the southern and eastern coasts of South Africa, from the Cape Peninsula up to KwaZulu-Natal. These fish prefer rocky shorelines, reefs, and underwater ledges, where they hunt for mollusks and crustaceans. Prime fishing spots include the Cape of Good Hope, Port Elizabeth, and the waters surrounding Durban..
The best time to target musselcracker is during the cooler months of spring and early summer (September to December), though they can be caught year-round. These fish tend to move into shallower waters during this time to feed, making them more accessible to shore-based anglers as well as those fishing from boats.
About Musselcracker
The musselcracker (Cymatoceps nasutus), also known as the white musselcracker or "cracker," is a large, heavy-bodied fish found primarily in the coastal waters of southern Africa. Known for its massive head and powerful jaws, the musselcracker can easily crush hard-shelled prey like mussels, crabs, and other shellfish, and that’s how it got its name. This species has a striking appearance, with a robust body, silvery scales, and dark vertical stripes, which become more pronounced in juveniles and fade as the fish matures.
Musselcracker can grow impressively large, with some fish reaching over 1 meter (40 inches) in length and weighing more than 45 kilograms (99 pounds). Their strength, size, and reputation as fierce fighters make them a highly desirable catch among sport fishers. These fish inhabit rocky reefs and kelp beds, where they forage for food in deeper waters. Musselcrackers are slow-growing and long-lived, with some individuals living for over 30 years.
Given their slow growth rate, conservation measures are often in place to protect them, and anglers are encouraged to practice catch-and-release and observe size and bag limits. The musselcracker is a formidable and rewarding catch for any angler, offering not only an exhilarating fight but also the chance to bring home delicious, high-quality meat. Whether fishing from shore or boat, targeting this species is sure to deliver a thrilling experience for those willing to take on the challenge.
How to Catch?
Musselcracker are a challenging catch that requires patience and skill. The best way to catch them is through bottom fishing, as they are often found feeding close to the seabed. When targeting musselcracker, look for rocky outcrops or reefs close to the shore, as they tend to feed around these structures. Deep-water fishing around reefs further offshore can also yield good results, especially for larger specimens.
Natural bait is most effective for musselcracker, with favorites including crabs, mussels, octopus, and squid. These baits should be rigged securely on circle hooks to avoid getting snatched off by the fish’s powerful jaws. When fishing from the shore, try casting the bait into turbulent rough water.
Musselcrackers are known for their aggressive strikes and tough battles, often requiring anglers to stay focused and use skill to reel them in before they can break the line on sharp rocks. These fish have a reputation as 'dirty fighters,' pulling hard and diving into rocky crevices to escape. Patience is key, and once hooked, the fish will test the limits of even the best fishing gear.
